Into the Old Woods
The Halflings of the Western Lands can be sorted into two distinct types. The Stout variety live in small agricultural communities on the Great Plains of the Western Lands. Here they live among their own kind, far away from the meddling of outsiders. Often under the protection of a nearby human lord, with whom they trade their goods. The Stout halflings have lived in the Western lands since the fall of the Dragons, but they themselves have no legends that speak of their origins. The onset of the Great War has hit the Stout Halflings hard, with looters and pillagers running rampant across large parts of the Western Lands.
The other variety of Halfling, the Lightfoots used to be nomadic herders long ago. Moving with their herds across the plains. As the numbers of humans grew and farmland spread across grazing areas of their herds, the Lightfoots turned to trade to survive. They live together forming Caravans that can range from fifty to as large as a thousand individuals. The arrival of a Halfling Caravan is often a major event in many human towns and cities. Many halflings survive as entertainers, bringing their plays and their music with them on the road. With the coming of the War most Lightfoot Caravans have taken great care in avoiding the most wartorn parts of the land.
